Learning Ears
The Learning Ears program brings the vocal component to The Listening Program that we currently use in our center for Sensory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia, and Auditory Processing development, etc.
LEARNING EARS is a proven educational program that directly addresses learning, language and communication challenges for people of all ages. The greatest obstacle to a person reaching their potential is the inability to receive and process information more accurately and effectively.
Over the past decade, adults and children have experienced success using LEARNING EARS at home, in professional clinics and in schools. After the basic 20 week program, LEARNING EARS Practitioners commonly report outstanding improvement in:
- Attention and Task Completion
- Listening and Understanding
- Speech, Language and Vocabulary
- Reading Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Dyslexia
- Communication, Behavior and Social Skills
- Thinking and Problem Solving
- Motivation and Self-Confidence
- Sensory Integration, Movement and Coordination
People of all ages can benefit from the training and exercises in the LEARNING EARS program. It has been used effectively with students who are challenged by language delays, communication disorders, learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, developmental delays and attention deficits. It is also appropriate for individuals who want to improve their listening and communication skills for professional and personal growth.
Learning Ears Program Description
The individualized LEARNING EARS program has four training phases and is designed and delivered to address predetermined goals agreed upon by the practitioner and client. The client records listening experiences and observations in a weekly journal for each phase.
Phase 1 (four weeks)
Weeks 1-4 follow an assessment and intake process provided by the LEARNING EARS Practitioner to set goals for the program. This phase initiates the auditory training and stimulation to improve the client’s alertness and interest in listening. The ability to focus on desired input and filter out what is not relevant can begin to emerge. This phase prepares the client for more advanced auditory stimulation with Ear-Voice Training in Phases 2 and 3.
- The client follows a prescribed plan to listen to The Listening Program 30 minutes daily, five days each week.
- Gayle Moyers prepares a personalized Learning Ears workbook for each client based on the Learning Ears checklists completed and send to her.
- Weekly consultations are scheduled by phone or on site with the LEARNING EARS Practitioner.
Phase 2 (six weeks)
Weeks 5-10 introduce Ear-Voice Training exercises using 30 structured and sequenced “Listen and Repeat” lessons. These lessons follow the developmental sequence of sound frequencies for language acquisition. The focus of this phase is verbal input and output and exploring voice potential. The client is guided to experience new skill development for listening and speaking behaviors.
- The client follows a prescribed listening program 15 minutes daily, five days each week.
- The client works for an additional 15-20 minutes, five days each week, on LEARNING EARS Ear-Voice Training equipment, which is provided by the LEARNING EARS Practitioner. The activities, lessons and methods will be prescribed, monitored and adjusted, as needed, by the LEARNING EARS Practitioner. Spelling is integrated into the daily lessons.
- Weekly consultations are scheduled by phone or on site with the LEARNING EARS Practitioner.
Phase 3 (six weeks)
Weeks 11-16 introduce the “Rehearsed Reading” method. It provides exercises and training on the Ear-Voice Training equipment to establish new reading habits and patterns that will increase reading rate, accuracy and comprehension. Oral reading is practiced to reinforce new reading and oral language skills. The client follows a prescribed listening program 15 minutes daily, five days each week.
- The client works for an additional 15-20 minutes, five days each week, using the LEARNING EARS Ear-Voice Training equipment, which is provided by the LEARNING EARS Practitioner. The activities, lessons and methods will be prescribed, monitored and adjusted, as needed, by the LEARNING EARS Practitioner.
- Weekly consultations are scheduled by phone or on site with the LEARNING EARS Practitioner.
Phase 4 (four weeks)
Weeks 17-20 conclude the LEARNING EARS basic training program. During Phase 4, the client will learn oral reading techniques to reinforce and transition into independent use of newly acquired listening, speaking and reading skills without the Ear-Voice Training equipment. Clients learn how to independently use their home listening library to support their needs and lifestyle.
- The client follows a prescribed listening program 30 minutes daily, five days each week.
- The client will use new techniques and practice oral reading skills without the Ear-Voice Training equipment. Additional strategies will be introduced and practiced for application of new skills.
- Weekly consultations are scheduled by phone or on site with the LEARNING EARS Practitioner.
The uniqueness of this program is that we can assist distant clients; we are able to provide this program through a weekly 30 minute telephone conference after all the materials have been received by the client. The materials are rented from Prescription for Success for 12 weeks of the program for a very reasonable fee.
For clients that are able to come to our center, we demonstrate and work with the parent and student with the weekly assignment.

This is truly a wonderful testimony for “THE LEARNING EARS PROGRAM” written by Susan Cormier, a Denver Hub writer, who interviewed Claudette, Nate and Kate Tormohlen, a homeschooled student and his mother.
Learning Program Creates an Avid Reader
Third-grader Nate Tormohlen likes to read every day. That’s a dramatic change from nine months ago when the Aurora home-schooler with severe dyslexia “didn’t even want to get a near a book.”
Now, he said, “I read to my parents at night.” And if he’s not too tired after they tuck him into bed, “I’ll grab a book and start reading to myself.”
What made the difference for this youngster? A 20-week individualized educational program called LEARNING EARS that is now offered by Prescription for Success, a learning center in Parker.
The program uses music to develop an individual’s reading and listening skills, which are essential to learning and academic achievement, according Claudette Anderson, who owns the center with her husband, Perry.
“As struggling students learn to listen, interpret and remember information, they can overcome learning challenges and experience success within weeks of training,” said Anderson, the only certified provider of Learning Ears in Colorado.
Students work with Anderson one day a week at the Parker center or on a weekly telephone conference call. In addition, parents work with their children five days a week at home.
“It’s great that parents are involved too because they see the progress,” Anderson said. “And most important of all, the child sees the progress.”
Nate’s mother, Kate Tormohlen, said she has seen a big improvement in her son’s abilities.
“He seems to have taken off just recently. It’s amazing,” she said. “He loves coming here. Claudette and Perry have just been amazing to work with.”
Anderson also has noted a dramatic improvement in the speed and accuracy of Nate’s reading.
“He was making progress with our other programs, but he had a major breakthrough with LEARNING EARS,” Anderson said. “And that’s what I’m seeing with all my students.’’
The training is not just limited to youth, Anderson said, noting that “people of all ages can benefit from the training and exercises.” And she said she’s excited that she can use a weekly telephone call to assist clients who do not live in the Denver metro area.
In addition to dyslexia, Anderson said the program works with students who are challenged by language delays, communication disorders, learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, developmental delays and attention deficits.
