Career Counseling at Prescription for Sucess®
The employment rate in America has risen from .2% to 6.1% in just five years as reported by CBS News in September 2008. By year’s end, it is estimated that US companies will have eliminated 1 million in jobs. As a result, job availability has become scarce and competition is fierce. If you’re in a position where you find yourself looking to change careers or advance in your current position, the SOI Career counseling will increase your chances for success.
As a service to those looking to advance or change careers, Prescription For Success offers Career Counseling that compares the abilities you currently have to that of the new job position you seek. Because you’re learning abilities are a good indication of your full career potential, our SOI assessment, which measures cognitive learning abilities, provides a solid basis for career exploration.
How Our Career Counseling Works
It is too limiting to rely solely on your current skills and experience so we utilize the results of your SOI assessment. The SOI assessment is a profile you would complete at our center that assesses your individual learning ability. We then compare it with the requirements of a wide variety of jobs. The comparison shows you where your current potential lies within those positions. This computerized printout graphs your learning potential with the job requirements, showing you whether you really have what it takes to succeed in the job you seek. If you do not have the learning skills in place for the position, you have the choice to improve on your deficits or look for another line of work that best matches your current abilities. This saves you time in pursuing a career that is unfulfilling or will give you an edge during the application and interview phase of pursuing a career that is right for you.
The usual mode of Career Counseling is done using the following criteria:
We see applicants who want to achieve advancement within their present company, but are unsure if they have the abilities necessary to advance in their positions. We measure their abilities to assess their cognitive potential for the position that they aspire to. From there, applicants have the option to improve on their current abilities by engaging in exercises that will give them cognitive strength or choose a career that best suits their current level of capabilities.
Career Change
Some applicants seek job retraining; however, their past academic skills are not enough to carry them through. Some applicants have great academic records from high school or college, but may not have the learning abilities necessary to do well in their next on-the-job-training. As with career advancement, we measure current abilities and help you address any talents lacking for the position you seek. The advantage here is that upon completion, our applicants will have improved upon the skills necessary to help them stand out.
High School Students
It is traditional for high school counselors to counsel students as to what career the student should pursue upon graduation. The counselors draw from school achievement as their primary indicator of a student’s ability to understand the formal training necessary for job preparation. This method is limiting because, quite often, many jobs require abilities that may not have been taught in schools. For example, Dental assistants need more figural-spatial ability than is required in high school science or math.
For high school students, the best time for true Career Counseling is well before the senior year. We recommend that students begin looking at Career Counseling in their junior year. If counseling is given at the senior level and the career the student desires to pursue is not suitable to their learning ability, they have lost the time before college to develop the necessary learning skills.
